The Limitless Leader Newsletter: Your 2027 Planning Should Start Now

Your 2027 Planning Should Start Now

Most people wait until December to start thinking about the next year.

I don't.

In fact, my executive team and I are getting ready to spend several days together before the year is over, doing exactly that.

Not reviewing what went wrong.

Not rushing through a list of KPIs.

Not filling in a spreadsheet because the calendar says it's time to plan.

We're going to step away from the day-to-day and ask bigger questions:

What do we actually want to build?

What's possible?

What do we need?

What would we do if we weren't starting with the constraints?

Because I don't want to stumble into 2027.

I want to build it intentionally.

Too often, annual planning starts with the wrong question:

"What are our goals for next year?"

And suddenly we're looking backward.

  • What did we accomplish?
  • What did we miss?
  • What numbers do we need to improve?
  • What can we realistically fit in?

Those questions matter.

But if you start there, you can accidentally make your future a slightly improved version of your past.

Dream first. Plan second.

Before we map goals, we're creating space to think bigger.

We'll talk about:

  • What we want.
  • What we need.
  • What's missing.
  • What resources we'll need.
  • What we want the business to look and feel like.
  • What we're capable of if we stop assuming the answer has to look like last year.

Then we'll turn those ideas into actual goals, priorities, and resources.

That's the difference between setting goals and creating a vision for what's next.

When you give yourself permission to think beyond what's immediately practical, you often discover that the plan needs to change.

Maybe you need different resources.

Maybe you need to stop doing something.

Maybe the team needs to grow.

Maybe the opportunity is bigger than you initially thought.

You can't build the right plan if you haven't first decided what you're actually trying to build.

Your challenge this week:

Before you plan 2027, ask these four questions:

1. DREAM: What do we want that's bigger than what we have today?

2. DEFINE: What would success actually look like?

3. RESOURCE: What people, money, systems, time or capabilities would make it possible?

4. COMMIT: What are we willing to prioritize—and what are we willing to leave behind?

Don't wait for January. What would you put on your 2027 vision board if you weren't worried about whether it was realistic yet?
